About HockeyFan 3.0
This sort of started out as an experiment with creating preferences on the fly, and turned out to be a rather good method for storing and showing jerseys from the database (for those people who like to have a lot of them to choose from). It's more convenient then JerseyCal and lets you exceed 31 and easily add and remove jerseys. To explain things, on a simple level, all you do is enter the ID from the database of the jersey you want to add then hit the blue arrow button. If the jersey exists then it is shown semi-transparent in full size. (If not a white jersey with a question mark appears.) If you want to store and show the widget you simply hit the green plus button to have it added to your icon collection. If succesful the background will turn from black to white and the jersey will no longer be semi-transparent.
To show or remove jerseys simply click on an icon and select either "Delete" or "Display" from the menu that appears. In Dashboard the widget will flip to reveal the jersey, in Yahoo! Widgets everything but the jersey will slide out of view. To return to the main side simply click the arrow that appears when you mouse over the jersey.
Both widgets will check to see if you already have a jersey amongst your icons and insure that you don't get duplicates, if you enter an ID that already exists amongs them nothing will happen.
The Yahoo! Widgets version is built using an SQLite database (which is a godsend for things like this and recently became available in v4.0 of the engine). This means that your info is stored within the widget itself, which is why 2 icons appear when you first start the widget as an example (these you can delete...). You can actually transfer the widget between computer and even operating systems and all your icons will remain intact. It's a pretty nifty thing, and offers a lot of possibilites.
The dock in Yahoo! will take the form of the current jersey/last jersey you displayed when the widget is active. It differs from JerseyCal in that it has a keyhole appearance. This way you can tell the difference easily...
Both widgets actually record the number of times you have shown a jersey, not that this information is of any importance to anyone, but it was an interesting little tid bit to include. If anyone breaks a thousand I want screen shots...
Both the Yahoo! and the Dashboard version are available for downloading here:HockeyFan 3.0 Page,

I have Yahoo! Widgets and wanted to download that version of this widget, but instead of a link to get it, there is only the text "Yahoo! Widgets version." Please post a link.
Sorry about that, I originally had a link via Yahoo!'s site, unfortunately they seem to have updated things in their own way and not bothered to inform users of the changes. Which means that all my links simply dissapeared. I will put up a new link as soon as possible.
Hi there,
I wasn't sure if this was just today, or previously, but I can't download the new version either.
I just updated to Widgets v 4.5, and the old one (version 1.2) I had isn't working anymore.
Help! I can't work without Ryan Smyth's Oilers jersey on my desktop.
Please try the direct link here, if you are having problems with the Yahoo! download:
HockeyFan 3.0 for Yahoo
If you are still having problems contact me directly at hockeywidgets@gmail.com
This version should work with YW v4.5
I downloaded this widget last night, and put an entire team's worth of jerseys into it. I opened it up tonight, and none of the jerseys I put in are there, it's completely empty. When I bring up the dock, I can actually see one of the jerseys in the docked version of the widget, but when I click to open the widget, they're all gone. Has this happened before? It's not gonna be any use if I can't save any jerseys I want to display.
This seems to happen if you aren't the "root" user of the computer. I'm not sure what causes it exactly but it seems like an issue with the Windows file structure - especially in Vista.
Your jerseys are still saved, the problem is that the widget isn't finding the file that the information was written to. Try a search on your computer for a file that has the following name: hwcom1
That file needs to be in the top most directory of your main file folder. For some reason Windows has a habbit of moving it. I'm going to try and fix this completely in the next release, and I'm sorry for the problems.
Hi, same guy from the last question. I am the only user of my computer, and I use XP, not Vista. I searched for that file, and it came up in 2 places- Program Files\Yahoo!\Widgets and Program Files\Mozilla Firefox. Firefox is the main browser I use. I'm not sure what you mean by "top most directory of your main file folder", but is that one of these?
I believe that the one that is relevant is the one that is stored in the Yahoo! folder. Do the following and see if it restores your jerseys:
Copy both files and put them in a new folder so that they are backed up. Now take the one that is in the Firefox folder and replace the one in the Yahoo! folder with it then restart the widget. That might do the trick. If it doesn't e-mail me, hockeywidgets@gmail.com
and I'll see what I can do. This is a problem that I need to solve for the future. Especially since you've proven that it isn't either of the two issues I thought it was.
Hi again.. that last trick that you mentioned seems to have worked. I replaced the file in the Yahoo folder with the one from the Firefox folder, and the jerseys were restored. Hopefully it stays that way, and that it will also remember any new ones that I happen to add to it. Thanks for the help!
I am having the same problem as the other guy.All the jerseys stored in are gone and now it wont let me save any jerseys or display them.It is basically broke.I have 4 differant hwcom files all on my desktop.I didnt know what it was and I moved it from my desktop to a differant folder and thats when it stopped but then another new hwcom file popped up and then I read the blog and so i left it and tried moving them around and nothing works.I have internet explorer not firefox and yahoo widgets the newest version. What do I do?
it seems like everything broke the first time I restarted my computer after all the jerseys got enterd in.I even tried deleting the widget and re downloading it and that did nothing .It still is exactly the same.
Darth.
If you have the hwcom files then your jerseys are saved...on one of them. You'll have to find out which one. If you can check the dates on when they were created it will most likely be the oldest one.
Shut the widget down completely, then find the folder that contains the hwcom file that was LAST created. It should be in the Yahoo folder. Replace that with whatever hwcom file is the oldest. Then restart the widget and see if the jerseys appear.
There seems to be an issue with Windows' file structure that I hadn't taken into account, it apparently creates one file and then on a restart creates another. If you replace that second file with the first (like named above) it SHOULD restore your original selections. Those hwcom files contain all of the information that is used, as long as you have the original you shouldn't have a problem getting your jerseys back.
I will try and solve this on the next update to the widget. The SQLite structure used is relatively new to Yahoo! Widgets so I'm still getting it all straightened out.
Let me know if you are still having problems, don't hesitate to e-mail me.
It is still not working.I only have 1 hwcomefile now.I uninstalled everything and reinstalled it and it was working fora while again but now same thing.it wont even let meadd any new jerseys or display anything that I enter,Iput in a number example 0001and the jerseywill comeup but i cant add it or display it
Darth,
There have been a lot of problems with this widget. I'm going to look into it the next opportunity I can and put out an update. If people have any interest I am considering actually making this widget compatible with an online storage area. You would be able to add your widgets via the website and then see them on the widget. This would remove some of the problems with the storing of the file.
You would essentially just create a simple name and login and then add your jerseys. In the preferences you would enter your name and password and your jerseys would appear. If you want to have multiple sets you could just create multiple accounts.
Does that sound like something that would be appealing? I really want this widget to work for people, and it seems like the current method has caused a lot of issues.
That would work for me.The only problem though is its not even letting me display any jerseys now. When I put in the number and click on the plus nothing happens.
have you thought of makeing the fronts of the jerseys like the teams logos. That way we could didplay the front and back of the jersey?
There is one thing you can try. There is a file called:
HockeyFan3.widget.plist
It is in a folder called Yahoo! Widget Engine in your Preferences folder. Shut down the widget, find that file and throw it in the trash. Then restart the widget and see if it helps.
As for the fronts of jerseys, I've specifically avoided them because of the logos. You aren't really supposed to use them in your own work without permission from the teams and leagues.
Where is that file located,i cant find it.I still can puthe number in,the jersey comes up but I cant display it or save it.Any updaate on a new version that might fix this?
Can you please help.I still cant get it to work.I enter a number example 9999 and the gretzky jersey comes up,but when I click on the plus it does nothing, wont let me add any jerseys or display any.I have tried deleting and reinstalling nothing works.
I downloaded this widget today and I started putting in the ID numbers of the players I wanted. But when I tried to delete them they displayed a question mark and it won't go away. It would go on to say how many times it was displayed I click on display goes to show me how many times it was displayed. I try to click delete and it won't go away. I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it but it still won't go away. I am wondering how to delete the jerseys.
TO EVERYONE WHO IS HAVING PROBLEMS:
If you are using Leopard that is where the issue is. I am going to try and get a Leopard compatible version out soon.
If you are using Yahoo! there is an issue if you are on a PC and do not have sufficient privileges (apparently).
I am hoping to completely change the functionality of this widget in the coming weeks and hopefully solve all the problems. Thanks for being patient.
